Their common name describes the behaviour of these birds when searching for food on the ground: they use their long bills to "thrash" through dirt or dead leaves. All of these birds eat insects and several species also eat berries.

Why is it called a brown thrasher?

The name thrasher may come from the bird's habit of thrashing about with its bill and tossing the leaves away - or maybe from its habit of thrashing insects and other prey items on hard ground to kill them. Thrashers also thresh the leaves and ground litter.
